Our Breast Services

There are a wide variety of reasons that a patient may require reconstructive breast surgery. Some patients want to restore their normal appearance following breast cancer treatment. Others simply want to improve their body image and attain their ideal breast size and shape.

In either case the surgeons at the Department of Plastic Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center are committed to offering our patients the most advanced cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery procedures available.

Our doctors are also committed to helping patients heal in every sense of the word. That’s why the Department of Plastic Surgery’s surgeons use a collaborative approach to help patients. Our surgeons collaborate with doctors in other medical specialties such as oncology to ensure that a patient not only receives the physical outcome they desire, but also the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional well-being they need. Breast services include:

Enlargement/Augmentation (Implants)

Breast enlargement, or augmentation, is a surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breast. In this procedure saline or silicone implants are inserted through a small incision and placed behind the breast tissue to create natural and larger breasts. Healing time for breast enlargement procedures is approximately 1 to 2 weeks.

Breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, is a procedure that elevates and firms sagging breasts. In order to achieve this, excess skin is removed and surrounding tissue is tightened in order to raise the breast.

Women with disproportionately large breasts can experience persistent pain, discomfort and self-consciousness. To resolve these issues, breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty), is used to reduce the size of breasts. Breast reduction surgery involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat and skin to achieve a breast size that is proportionate to a woman’s body.

While the diagnosis of breast cancer can be physically and emotionally traumatic, the prospect of a mastectomy can also cause additional psychological stress. After a mastectomy, women have the option of reconstructive breast surgery.

Breast reconstruction involves several surgical procedures that restore a breast to its normal shape, appearance and size. To achieve this surgeons apply advanced techniques to rebuild a woman’s breast, minimizing severe scarring that impacts body image. Reconstructive surgery helps women regain a sense of self-confidence and normalcy and allows them to feel whole again.

Men with enlarged breasts have a condition called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia affects men of all ages and occurs due to the excess growth of breast tissue. If the condition cannot be resolved through medical therapy or lifestyle changes, a plastic surgeon will perform a male breast reduction procedure.

Breast reduction for men involves the surgical removal of excess glandular tissue, fat and skin to correct a man’s overdeveloped and enlarged breasts. Men who have undergone this procedure regain a positive body image and experience relief from physical and emotional pain.

Breast Implant Removal

Breast implant removal surgery is a procedure that is used to remove previously inserted implants. The surgery is commonly done to decrease or change the size of a woman’s breast or to make room for new implants. Some women also undergo this procedure for medical reasons including implant leakage or rupture, asymmetry, bleeding and infection.

If circumstances dictate that a woman needs to or wants to have their implants removed, breast implant removal is a readily available surgical option to help them attain their desired body.
