Patients who undergo facial plastic surgery choose to do so for a variety of reasons. While many have a desire to restore their more youthful appearance, others are seeking to change a specific facial feature to correct a condition that affects how they look and how their body works. Whatever the reason, the Department of Plastic Surgery at LomaLindaUniversityMedicalCenter provides patients many cosmetic and reconstructive surgical procedures to enhance and improve the face and neck.
Our specialists and plastic surgeons are among the most experienced in the nation. They apply a multidisciplinary team approach to ensure each individual patient’s needs are met. At Loma Linda, patients will attain the facial features they desire in addition to the mental, spiritual and emotional support they need following surgery from our compassionate team of doctors and staff. Facial services include:
Facelift, or medically known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that tightens the skin on the face and neck. The procedure involves the removal of excess facial fat, the tightening of facial muscles and the stretching of skin for a firmer, smoother look. Facelifts repair the visible signs of aging including sagging in the midface, deep creases below the lower eyelids and loose skin beneath the jaw line.
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, surgically removes excess fat, muscle and skin to redefine eye shape and repair sagging and drooping upper and lower eyelids. It results in an improved appearance to the surrounding eye area, making a patient look more rested and alert.
Commonly known as a forehead lift, a brow lift is surgical procedure that reduces the wrinkles and creases that develop across the forehead through excess skin and fat removal and the tightening of the forehead muscles. It can also correct a sagging brow and deep furrows between the eyes.
Nose surgery encompasses any surgery that is performed inside or outside the nose. The two types of nasal surgery are rhinoplasty and septoplasty. Rhinoplasty deals with reshaping and improving the proportion of the nose to achieve facial balance and improve self-confidence. It may also be combined with septoplasty – a surgical procedure to correct congenital defects and acquired deformities of the nasal septum (the wall inside the nose that separates the nostrils) to improve breathing.
Cleft lip and palate are common birth defects in which the tissues and bone inside the mouth do not meet and result in an opening in the lip and or palate (roof of the mouth). Children born with cleft lip or palate are confronted with many health issues such as ear infections, hearing loss, feeding problems and speech defects.
Cleft lip and palate repair are surgical procedures used to correct these abnormalities, restoring function and a more normal appearance. Plastic surgeons rebuild a cleft lip by suturing the two sides of the lip together. A cleft palate repair, however, is a more complicated procedure and involves using tissue from either side of the mouth to fill in the gap. Once corrected, the child will be able to lead a happy, healthy life. For more information on cleft lip and palate birth defects please visit: http://www.acpa-cpf.org/ or http://www.cappskids.org/.
Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a procedure for improving the shape, size or position of the ears. The correction of both congenital and acquired structural ear defects results in a more natural ear shape that is proportionate to the patient’s face.
A neck lift (platysmaplasty) is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat around the jaw line. The end result is a more defined, slimmer and youthful looking chin and neck.
